SUDs in 2012: The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly

New Year's is a good a time as any for predictions. Really, I'm partial for Tuesdays in March, but heck, why not predict what will happen in the world of single use disposables in 2012 and beyond. After all the reading and writing we've done surrounding this topic over the last several months, a few trends have started to emerge. So, based on my loads of empirical evidence (read: my gut), here's the good, the bad, and the ugly of what I think will happen in 2012 with single use disposables.

"1 paper cup = 1,006 ceramic cup uses"

This scientific calculation just in: ceramic cups require more resources to manufacture and must be used 1,006 times before reaching the equivalent level of environmental friendliness as a paper cup. 

And I don't know about you, but using a ceramic mug for two years just seems impossible. [Larry David face emoticon here.]

Germs vs. Suds

 

I was at the Metropolitan Museum of Art last week and saw this sign in the cafeteria.

Now I want the last creepy guy’s mouth germs off of my water bottle as much as the next guy. But this seems excessive. Using one cup for less than a minute to fill up a water bottle and then throwing it out can’t possibly be the only solution for thirsty museum-goers. 

I’m just spit-balling here, but maybe putting a sign on the soda fountain saying “Please minimize the spread of germs by holding your water bottle at a safe distance from the fountain.” It’s got to do at least as much good as the laminated sign around the corner from and out of side of the soda fountains.
